Soupir

Soupir is a commune with 296 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Aisne in the Picardie region; it belongs to the district of Soissons, to Canton Vailly -sur -Aisne and the Association of Municipalities Val de l' Aisne.

Geography

The community Soupir lies about 18 kilometers south of Laon and 18 kilometers east of Soissons. In the south of the municipality extends to the Aisne and the parallel Aisne - side channel, in the north- east touches the Oise -Aisne Canal, municipality area. North of Soupir rises the ridge of the Chemin des Dames.

History

1917, the village was the scene of the Battle of the Aisne and was completely destroyed. In the valley there are tens of thousands of soldiers' graves.

  • Remains of the castle Soupir, which originated in the 16th century and was rebuilt and expanded in the late 19th century. The destroyed in the First World War the castle was not rebuilt, the ruins are listed buildings ( monument historique ).
