The South African cuisine is not a single entity and is interpreted by each of the different population groups in South Africa for themselves and claimed. Each province in South Africa has peculiarities and priorities. Meat

Meat is one of the main ingredients of Cape cuisine. Most popular lamb is followed by beef. Pork, however, is not widespread. Is very popular game.

In rural areas, increasingly, in urban, particularly popular is the meat of the springbok, blesbok and Oryx, Kudu, Eland and Warthog.

In general it can be said that any meat is processed and consumed. Even animals such as porcupine are always a welcome change.

A typical South African specialty is dried meat - Biltong.

Fish

Amazingly, fish plays a minor role among the ingredients. The Atlantic Ocean along the west coast is one of the richest and most productive waters in the world.

On the coasts ( here specifically West Coast and Cape ) and in the big cities such as Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town Fish is eaten in significant quantities. The strong increase in tourism and improved infrastructure have made fish in recent years popular.

Only members of the indigenous population, traditionally strongly represented in fisheries, eat fish regularly, partly due to religious commandments.

Poultry

Fowl, mainly chicken is processed and prepared in large quantities. Mainly for export is the flesh of the African ostrich. This healthy and low-fat meat is gaining in popularity. Is very tasty and can be cooked Hausperlhuhn.

Vegetables

Vegetables are rare, as usual, served in Europe as a side dish, but is usually part of various dishes.

Popular are pumpkin (including Gem squash and butternut ), onion, carrot, beans, corn (mainly processed into Mieliepap ). Potatoes and green salad are rarely served. Worth mentioning is the Waterblommetjie ( Aponogeton distachyos ) to German "African Wasserähre ", an aquatic plant that is harvested in the winter months.

Desserts

Desserts in South Africa are not very independent. Here dominate hearty, heavy and heavily sweetened dishes such as trifle, Malva Pudding, Koeksisters or Melktert. Although all types of fruit are grown in enormous quantities, these are mainly used for export.

Spices

Herbs and spices are used generously. Especially popular are coriander, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, ginger and chilli.

Drinks

In South Africa, will be served for dinner alcoholic and non- alcoholic beverages. A special role is played by the wine. Especially popular white wine is locally grown. Love drinking rooibos tea also. Popular also is beer.
