South African general election, 2009

On 22 April 2009 the South African general election was held. 26 parties competed for election, 13 succeeded in entering parliament. The turnout was 77.3 %.

The ruling African National Congress ( ANC) under Jacob Zuma defended its absolute majority, but lost the two-thirds majority, which he had won in the election in 2004.

The mandates for the National Assembly were allocated by proportional representation.

Final result

Except as set forth here were 13 other parties to the election that could not win a seat, as they were each less than 0.2 % of the vote.
