South Wimbledon tube station

South Wimbledon is an underground station of the London Underground in the London Borough of Merton. It is located at the boundary of Travelcard Zone 3 and 4 In the station building, the four main streets of Merton High Street crossing (to the east ), Merton Road (to the north ), Kingston Road (west ) and Morden Road ( in the south). In the year 2011 there were 3.75 million passengers these trains of the Northern Line station.

The station was opened on 13 September 1926 as part of the extension of Clapham Common after murders. It is not in the Wimbledon area, but about a kilometer southeast of it. When the station opened, it was assumed that by the name of Wimbledon a higher social prestige is connected as with the actual location of Merton. For reasons of geographical correctness line networks and the station building with South Wimbledon ( Merton ) were labeled at the beginning. However, the parentheses coincided with the time gradually away.

Designed by Charles Holden station is a symmetrical building in modernist style from Portland stone. It includes a high ticket hall with three entrances, which is flanked on both sides by single-storey shop wings. Since 1987, the building is a listed building (Grade II).
