Sphinx (documentation generator)

Sphinx is software documentation tool that converts reStructuredText into HTML pages as well as many other formats such as PDF, EPub and man pages. It is thereby supported the extensible nature of reStructuredText by using numerous extensions (eg for automatic documentation generation from source code, the presentation of mathematical notation or syntax highlighting ). The first public release (version 0.1.61611 ) was released on March 21, 2008. It had been developed for the documentation of the Python project, and is also used by the intensive.

Since its introduction in 2008, Sphinx has been increasingly used in other important Python-based projects such as Bazaar, SQLAlchemy, MayaVi, Sage, SciPy, Django and Pylons, still it is used for documentation of the Blender Python API. To simplify the maintenance of software documentation, the read- the- docs - Project was established that automates the upload of the current documentation process after each commit. The Python Software Foundation promotes the read- the- docs project.
