Špindlerův Mlýn

Spindleruv Mlyn ( German Spindleruv Mlyn ) is a town of 1,397 inhabitants in the Giant Mountains in Czech Republic. It belongs to Okres Trutnov in the Hradec Králové Region. The place is located in 715-1310 m altitude and has an area of about 77 km ².

Geography

Spindleruv Mlyn is located at the confluence of the Labe ( Elbe) and Svatopetrský Potok (groundwater). In the northeast of the long ridge Kozi hřbety rises (goat back).

History

The first mention of Spindleruv Mlyn are from the first half of the 16th century. The oldest, dense populated district of the municipality Spindleruv Mlyn is St. Peter, where since the 1516 silver and copper were promoted. Bedřichov owes its existence to a 1746 built glassworks factory. Named the district is by Friedrich Graf Harrach, whose family owned the part of the Giant Mountains. Spindleruv Mlyn itself originated in the late 18th century and was founded by immigrants from Silesia forest workers. At the mouth of the creek in the same Dolský be moved to the Lumberjack family Hollman. 1784 there were five cottages, a mill and a forester's house. On July 13, 1793 approved the Emperor of the Habsburg Monarchy, Francis II, by a patent, the establishment of a parish and the construction of a church that was to replace the dilapidated building in of Saint Peter. In the 18th century, the ore mining of Saint Peter was restricted. Ever since the mid-19th century, tourism has developed as more and stronger economic factor, Spindleruv Mlyn 1850 a community formed in the judicial district or in the district Hohenelbe Hohenelbe. From 1939 to 1945 Spindleruv Mlyn in the Giant Mountains belonged to the Reich District of Sudetenland. After the Second World War, until then mostly German -speaking population of the town was marketed on the basis of the Beneš decrees. Today live in Spindleruv Mlyn mainly Czechs.

For place names

The original name of the place was " Spindler's Mill", named after the mill owner Spindler. Colloquially, the place was, however, usually called spindle mill, only gradually to Spindleruv Mlyn prevailed. This fact was borne in 1923 with an official name change bill. In the transcription of the German place name in the Czech language after the Second World War this was initially mistranslated as a Spindleruv Mlyn, in which the profession of Spindler is exercised. This corresponded to the colloquial, older name variant. After a long discussion took place then the amendment to the Czech name in the Czech genitive form Spindleruv Mlyn for " Spindler's Mill".

Tourism

At the beginning of the 20th century, the town was visited by persons to whom climate change was imposed in relation to their health. End of January 1922 was Franz Kafka on the recommendation of his family doctor after spindle mill, where he remained for four weeks, and where, under the writing held impression of the local environment, working on the novel The Castle began.

Today, tourism is by far the largest economic factor not only in Spindleruv Mlyn, but in the whole Giant Mountains. Especially in winter, the population of the place, by the tourists who mainly come from the Czech Republic itself, from Poland, Germany and the Netherlands, more than tenfold. Spindleruv Mlyn has some of the best skiing in the Giant Mountains. In addition to cross-country ski trails, there is a large, well-marked network of ski trails. For the summer tourism numerous hiking trails and mountain bike trails were reported. 1967 took place the World Cup in whitewater racing on the Elbe.

In the district of Labe ( Krause Bungalows ) is the Krause Bauden Dam ( Labe Dam ), in which the same is jammed.

Attractions

  • Elbquelle ( Pramen Labe ) - at 1386 m altitude provides a concrete well ring the symbolic source of the Elbe is ( Pramen Labe ). The actual source is slightly higher.
  • Pantschefall ( Pančavský vodopád ) - 140 m high waterfall on the edge of the Pantschewiese to the bottom of the Elbe valley.
  • Elbe waterfall ( Labský Waterfall ) - When Elbfallbaude the water falls 45 m over steep rapids in depth, another 200 m the water falls on the wall of Elbschlucht in the Elbgrund.
  • Elbklemme ( Labe soutěska ) - On 3 km long rapids, pots and Kesselauswaschungen in cuckoo land ( Kukačka ).
