Spine of God is the first studio album by the American band Monster Magnet, usually not included as EPs publications referred Tab and Monster Magnet. It was released in late 1991 on the German label Glitterhouse, in the U.S. it was released in February 1992. It is now considered classics of the stoner rock genre.

Style

The harder, more psychedelic rock sound was then compared with Mudhoney, early Soundgarden or faster songs of Saint Vitus. Only later did the term stoner rock was established for this mixture.

Formation

After Monster Magnet had released in early 1991 with their second Tab EP ( released in the U.S. this until 1993 ), the band released the end of Spine of God. For the album two pieces of the self-titled debut EP from 1990 were re-recorded with Nod Scene and Snake Dance. In addition, a cover of Grand Funk Railroad Sin 's a Good Man 's Brother was recorded. Following the band Soundgarden and Voivod toured the United States and was therefore able to earn a contract with major label A & M Records.

Reception

Uwe Deese from Rock Hard called the album his " current favorite Barney", but the plate was " nothing for weak nerves Metal cliché ". If Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath would listen to the album, " he finally put into retirement " would. Deese awarded 9.5 out of ten. The magazine put the Visions album in 2005 on the 109th place its " 150 albums for eternity ." Scott Alisoglu called on Blabbermouth.net the album a " legendary album" and praised the " spacey aura " and the " addictive " songwriting. He also awarded 9.5 out of ten. Jason Ankeny of Allmusic called Spine of God as the " metal album for people who hate metal albums ". It was a " glorious and unapologetische celebration of pure self-indulgence ." The rating was 4.5 out of five, including the award "AMG Album Pick".

Title list

All songs were written by Dave Wyndorf, except where stated otherwise. Spine of God was remastered in March 2006 with new artwork and booklet and a bonus piece republished.
