Spiros Latsis

Spiros Latsis John (Greek Spyros Latsis Σπύρος Λάτσης; born 1946 in Athens ) is a Greek bank managers and entrepreneurs. He is regarded as the richest man in Greece and one of the biggest beneficiaries of the euro bailout for the Greek banking system.

Spiros Latsis studied philosophy ( Ph.D.) at the London School of Economics. As the son of ship-owner and entrepreneur who died in 2003 Giannis Latsis he took over the management of the Group. In 2006 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Witten / Herdecke.

Business

About the Luxembourg-based EFG Group, the Latsis family has a share of 49 percent on the Swiss EFG International AG and 44 per cent of the Greek Euro bank EFG. Furthermore, the Latsis family owns substantial shares in the Greek oil company Hellenic Petroleum and at the Greek real estate company Lamda Development as well as other companies such as the Swiss airline PrivatAir.

According to The World's Billionaires of Forbes magazine Spiros Latsis has with his family an estimated fortune of 5.3 billion U.S. dollars. In the list of the 300 richest people in Switzerland the Swiss business magazine balance sheet the assets of the Latsis family in 2009 is estimated at around 6.5 billion Swiss francs, with a maximum value of 13.5 billion Swiss francs for the year 2007. Thus the Latsis family is one of the ten richest families in Switzerland. In 2013 it was announced that Spiros Latsis has moved from Geneva to Monaco.

Since 2008 Latsis fell from 68th place on the Forbes list with an estimated eleven billion dollars on last place with 219 (4.8 billion). Cause, among other things, the Greek financial crisis.

Affairs

2004 spent today's European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and his family one weeks free holiday on Latsis ' luxury yacht Alexander. When, after the yacht holiday in Brussels stricter environmental regulations for Greek ships were prevented, this led to a motion of no confidence in the EU Parliament.
