Sport in East Timor

Sport in East Timor suffers mainly due to a permanent shortage of money. Athletes are sometimes missing the simplest exercise equipment to exercise their discipline. First time in 2011 succeeded the East Timorese athletes at the Southeast Asian Games to celebrate international successes.

Sports

The most popular sport in East Timor is football. Furthermore, East Timorese athletes are regularly in the marathon and boxes active. Many young people operate martial arts, of which there is also a traditional form in East Timor. Widely used is the tradition of cock fight in which even money bet.

Football

The U23 team won the first East Timorese national football team on November 5, 2011, a match against the selection of Brunei 2-1. Martial Arts

Some East Timorese youth gangs emerge as Martial Arts on clubs. A study from 2006 indicates the number of members alone for 15 to 20 large martial arts groups with 20,000, an estimated 90,000 more will be non-registered members. That would mean that 70 % of young Timorese men pursue martial arts. Due to the high levels of violence between the gangs in 2008 a law was passed that the operation of martial arts heavily regulated. The National Martial Arts Association called Association for Martial Arts Timor- Leste ( Festil ).

Cycling

Every year, the Tour de Timor will take place, which is considered one of the toughest mountain bike race in the world. The first race took place from 24 to 28 August 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of the independence referendum of 1999, led more than 450 kilometers. Nearly 300 cyclists from 15 countries competed, including 25 from East Timor and two German. 2010, there were 340 riders from 16 nations.

Marathon

Born in France Yohan Goutt Goncalves will participate in the first East Timorese to Sochi Winter Olympic Games. He will participate in the Alpine Skiing Competition.

Paralympics

At the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008 stood as one of eleven athletes Domingos Sarmento Soares in wheelchair tennis. For this, however, had to borrow a wheelchair in Beijing, the 29 -year-old. Southeast Asia Games

Jogos da Lusofonia

In the first Jogos da Lusofonia 2006 in Macau East Timor took part in the following competitions: basketball, football, futsal, 800 m Men, 3000 meters men 5000 meters men and women, taekwondo, volleyball and beach volleyball. The Futsal team was defeated by Portugal with 56:0 and 76:0 of Brazil. Counter Macau defeat was significantly less with 13:4.
