Tour de Timor

The Tour de Timor is an annual mountain bike race in East Timor. Due to the poor road conditions and to be overcome great heights, it is referred to as one of the toughest bike race. For the first time it was held in 2009 to mark the tenth anniversary of the independence referendum of 1999. At the races take part men and women.

2006

In 2006, the race had been planned but had to be canceled due to the unrest erupted in the country.

2009

The tour was held until August 28, 2009, five days of 24. 257 cyclists from 15 countries competed, including 25 from East Timor and two from Germany. The route went through nine of the 13 districts in the country and began at the presidential palace in Dili, from where they led 128 km along the coast to Baucau. On the second day we went through the countryside in the district Viqueque with a 20 -kilometer climb to Loi - Huno, followed by an 80 kilometer drive along the south coast. 2010

The Tour de Timor 2010 took place with 340 riders from 16 countries from 13 to September 17. The route led from Dili along the coast towards the west to Balibo (124 km). On the second day we went on Maliana by Suai, near the south coast (95 km). The third stage led by the East Cova Lima up into the hill country after Ainaro (67 km). On the fourth day the route led over Maubisse after Aileu (68 km), with a peak at 1900 m before the last day of 56 km went back to Dili. The entire route had a range of 410 km.

Winner and winner of the $ 15,000 prize money was the Australian Adrian Jackson with only 29 seconds ahead in 14:35:22. Second was his compatriot Steele von Hoff, third in the Malaysian Shahrin Amir. Best East Timorese was Jacinto da Costa in 13th place, 1:57:07 behind the winner. 2011

The Tour de Timor 2011 was held from the 11th to the 16th of September and ran under the motto " Peace begins with me". The number of participants is limited to 350, 80 of which are supposed to be East Timorese. The first stage leads from the capital Dili southeast after Laclubar, in the center of the island. On the second day it comes down south to Beaco and on the third day further along the coast to Iliomar. The fourth stage leads over Lospalos by Com on the north coast. From there it goes on the fifth day Baucau along the north coast to Manatuto before it goes in the sixth leg back to Dili.

Winners were the Australian Luke Fetch for men and Peta Mullens among women. Includes drivers, supporters, media representatives and officials taking more than 1000 people participated in the Tour de Timor 2011.

2012

Before the actual race took place on September 8, 2012 Ride for peace instead of 500 East Timorese children. Start of the Tour de Timor was on the 10th of September in Tasitolu ( Dili ). The first stage was 104 kilometers along the coast from the capital Dili to the west by the districts Liquiçá and Bobonaro to the border town Mota'ain. The next day the tour crossed the Indonesian West Timor to East Timorese enclave of Oecusse where the stage after 92 kilometers ended in the district capital of Pante Macassar. On September 12, a 78 km long circuit was driven through the mountains of Oecusse, past the places Baqui, Bobometo, Passabe, Nitibe and Lifau. From sea level it was about down to 902 m. The next day it went from Pante Macassar back to Mota'ain on a 92 km long route through Indonesia. On September 14, the next stage was to 115 kilometers to the glenoid through the Subdistrikte Maliana, Cailaco and Hatulia. It went up to 1384 m. Participated have about 300 drivers, 96 of them from East Timor. The winner was. 2013

The tour in 2013 was launched on September 2nd. The first stage was 118 km from Dili to Baucau. On September 3, the route of Baucau led on to Ossu. A day later it went 114 km by seed. On 5 September, the 76 km - stage followed by Aileu and finally on the last day 98 km back to Dili. Remember were 290 drivers. The participants came from East Timor, Australia, the USA, South Africa, Portugal, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Belgium, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. However, only about 60 riders started to protest the fact that the organization was taken over by the Ministry of Tourism. The list of the final order at the end of the tour leads to only 48 riders.

The winner was in the Malaysians 18:25:24 Sharhin Bin Amir, best East Timorese Jacinto da Costa in 5th place with a distance of 51:14 for first place winners in the men. In the women's Osttimoresin France Lina Cabral won in 25:03:02.

The budget for the tour in 2013 amounted to U.S. $ 200,000. Main sponsor was Timor Telecom. Support came from the National Police, the armed forces, fire brigade, health and finance ministries and the East Timorese Cyclists Association ( Associação de Ciclismo timorense ). Race in the United States

Since 1999, leading the American city of Madison by a bike race called the Tour de Timor. It is a charity race for amateurs in favor of the sister city Ainaro in East Timor.
