View from Springer Mountain

The Springer Mountain is a 1148 m high mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountains on the border between the Fannin County and the Gilmer County in the northern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The mountain lies within the Chattahoochee National Forest and is the southern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.

Geography

The mountain consists of a wide, sparsely wooded with oaks because of the rocky subsoil mountaintop. Because of its remoteness and the rocky subsoil of the forest was never cleared. At the summit there is a bronze plaque that displays the southern end of the Appalachian Trail as well as a simple shelter. Lead to several mountain forest roads, the most popular access is via a 13 km long hiking trail from Amicalola Falls State Park.

History

The origin of the name is not known exactly, probably he was named in 1833 after the settlers William G. Springer. 1956 decided the Appalachian Trail Club to relocate the southern end of the Appalachian Trail on Springer Mountain, after the natural environment of the Oglethorpe Mountain, 23 km away, the original end point of the trail, was destroyed by roads and farms.
