The historical name Kotte means " fortress ." The city was from the 14th century to the 16th century, the capital of the Sinhalese kingdom of Kotte. The city was built on marshland on the banks of Diyawanna Oya as a fortress to protect the surrounding area against incursions from the Jaffna Kingdom of Arya Chakaravarth Dynasty. As founder of the city a Tamil leader named Alagakkonara is preserved. When Ibn Battuta Alagakkonara is called the king of Kurunegala, but other sources speak of a guard of Raigama Korale in the Kalutara district. In any case, I managed Alagakkonara the army of Arya Chakaravarth before Kotte to stop.

Kotte was a jala Durgha (water fortress ) in a triangular shape. The marshes of the Diyawanna Oya were the two long sides, whereas the shorter side was protected by an artificial moat. Later, the city capital of the island of Sri Lanka and Sri Jaya Pura Kotte Vardhana ( blessed fortress city of growing victory ) was renamed (a name to the later JRJayawardene gladly resorted using his own name spelling). In 1505 the Portuguese landed on the island and in 1565 acquired control of the city. Because of the continuing raids by troops of the neighboring Kingdom of Sitawaka ( Avissawella ) the city but was then abandoned and Colombo became the new capital.

The urbanization began back in the 19th century; remaining old neighborhoods were demolished and reused as building material.
