St. Ulrich's and St. Afra's Abbey (Augsburg)

The monastery of St. Ulrich and Afra is a former Benedictine monastery in the southern town of Augsburg in Bavaria, in the diocese of Augsburg.

History

The St. Ulrich and Afra consecrated monastery, collegiate St. Afra, was founded before 1012 by canons of the Church of St. Afra and was a Benedictine monastery. From 1643/1644 it was imperial abbey by the year 1802. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 in the wake of secularization. The city of Augsburg and the State of Bavaria shared ownership. 1805 a military hospital and a barracks for the cavalry in the monastery were established.

A new Benedictine community was founded in 1835 as the Abbey of St. Stephen.
