Staatsorchester Braunschweig

The Braunschweig State Orchestra was founded in 1587 by Duke Julius of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel, making it one of the oldest orchestras in the world.

History

The origins of the Braunschweig State Orchestra in 1587, founded by Duke Julius Ducal Court Orchestra. Became famous for the orchestra in the following centuries through the work of famous people such as Franz Liszt and Richard Strauss. 1918 lost its independence and became the court chapel orchestra of the Braunschweig State Theatre. This status kept the orchestra until the end of the Free State of Brunswick after the end of World War II. Only since the orchestra performs under the name of Braunschweig State Orchestra. Today, the orchestra held annual concerts in Brunswick with up to 40,000 listeners per year and performs at music festivals. In addition, it plays as Orchestra of the Staatstheater Braunschweig in about 120 opera performances per season.

Since about 1970, the Braunschweig State Orchestra was conducted by General Music Director Heribert Esser, Stefan Soltesz, Philippe Auguin, Jonas Alber and Alexander Joel. Carl Melles was, until his death in 2004, honorary conductor of the State Orchestra Braunschweig. On 22 January 2012, the Braunschweig State Orchestra appoints his former music director Sefan Soltesz Honorary Conductor.
