Stachyurus

Chinese Stachyurus ( Stachyurus chinensis)

The Perlschweife ( Stachyurus ), also called Swiss ferries are the only plant genus of the family of Stachyuraceae. They have their areas in eastern Asia.

Description

The Stachyurus species are deciduous or semi- evergreen shrubs, and occasionally small trees.

The alternate, undivided leaves are oval and triangular front acuminate to broadly lanceolate, narrowly lanceolate in S. salicifolius. The leaf margin is usually finely toothed, in some species with larger blunt teeth. At the base of each leaf blade are two long pointed stipules that fall, however early.

Typical are the inflorescences, which usually appear in early spring before the leaves. In each bud one arises in most species down hanging, also with some upright, pearl chain-like cluster. The radial symmetry, short -stalked, whitish to yellowish flowers are cruciform. The bell-shaped perianth consists of four petals and four similarly shaped but smaller sepals, which overlap each well at the edges. The eight stamens are in two circles. The vierfächrige ovary is upper constant. It is made a berry with leathery pericarp.
