Stan Coveleski

Anthony Stanley "Stan" Coveleski ( born July 13, 1889 in Shamokin, Pennsylvania, † March 20, 1984 in South Bend, Indiana), born as Stanislaus Kowalewski, was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Covey.

Biography

Stan Coveleski was of Polish descent; he grew up in the mining areas of Pennsylvania. His first stop in the Major League were the Philadelphia Athletics in 1912., Where he succeeded in his first start as a pitcher a shutout, but only four more starts followed this season. By 1916, he spent his career in the minor leagues and refined his Spitball there. Coveleski was one of the 17 throwers in the majors, which were allowed to use in 1920 the Spitball continued after the ban of this litter.

Five times in his career he won more than 20 games in the season. In the 1920 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers, he won three complete games and allowed only 2 runs to the success of the Cleveland Indians. Even with the Washington Senators in 1925, he could win the World Series.

Another notable game was played on 24 May 1918. Coveleski threw in a game over 19 innings the entire season in a 3-2 victory against the New York Yankees.

Its inclusion in the Baseball Hall of Fame took place in 1969. On June 10, 1976, he also became a member of the National Polish - American Hall of Fame.
