Stapeliae

Huernia macrocarpa, Illustration

The Stapeliinae are a subtribes in the tribe Ceropegieae of the subfamily of milkweed plants ( Asclepiadoideae ) in the family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ). The species of this taxon have their areas only in the Old World. A center of diversity ( center of biodiversity ) is the capensis. Most types of Stapeliinae are called carrion flowers. This term is however also used for species of the genus Rafflesia, which also flow through their flowers carrion smell to attract carrion flies for pollination of the flower.

Description

There are succulent plants. The flowers of many taxa flows from carrion smell to attract carrion flies for pollination.

System

Outer systematics

The Stapeliinae are a subtribes in the tribe Ceropegieae of the subfamily of milkweed plants ( Asclepiadoideae ) in the family of the dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ). Phylogenetic analyzes showed the following relationships within the tribe Ceropegieae:

Heterostemminae

Leptadeniinae

Anisotominae

Stapeliinae

Inside systematics

The first use of the subtribe - even as " Stapelieae " - was made in 1837 by George Don. The type genus of the subtribe Stapeliinae is Stapelia L. The subtribe was introduced in 2004 by Ulrich Meve and Sigrid songs as part of their molecular genetic studies again.

A synonym is Ceropegiinae Decne. ex Miq. ( 1857).
