Geography

Starrkirch- Wil sits on 419 m above sea level. M., 2 km east of the district main town Olten ( straight line ). The double municipality extends to the ridge between Olten and Dulliken south of the Aare, at the foot of the angel mountain range and on the foot of the Jura in the low post.

The area of ​​1.9 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Aare valley east of Olten Solothurn in the east midlands. The area extends from the edge of Aareniederung in a narrow strip on the south adjoining the Hardwald height, which is bounded on the east by the Wilerwald until the Jurassic offshore anticline of Engelberg chain. Neighboring communities of Starrkirch -Wil are Olten and Dulliken in the Canton of Solothurn and Oftringen and Aarburg in Canton Aargau.

Population

With 1631 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Starrkirch -Wil is one of the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Solothurn. Of the residents 93.4 % are German, 2.2 % Italian-speaking and 0.6 % speak Spanish ( as of 2000). The population of Starrkirch -Wil amounted in 1850 to 361 residents in 1900 to 572 inhabitants. During the 20th century, the population increased steadily until 1970 to 1124 people. After a temporary stagnation time a significant population increase has been recorded again since 1990. The settlement area of Starrkirch -Wil has grown together seamlessly with those of Olten and Dulliken.

Economy

Starrkirch -Wil was until well into the 20th century a rather dominated by the agriculture community. Today, farming, fruit growing, and forestry have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In Starrkirch -Wil today, among other companies in the construction industry and the packaging industry are represented. Early on Starrkirch -Wil has developed into a residential community, who commutes from a large part of the workforce to Olten or after Dulliken and in the region of Aarau to work.

History

The territory of Starrkirch -Wil was inhabited in the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age, which could be detected by various stray finds. The first mention of Starr church was already in 1036 under the name Starrchenchilcha; of 1045 the name Starckinchirgun is preserved. Later, the names Starnchilhun published ( 1173 ) and Starrchilch ( 1275 ). The place name probably comes from the Old High German personal name Starco and thus means Church of the Starco. Wil appears for the first time in 1217 as Wilere in the documents. From 1260 Wilon and Wile have survived, derived from the Late Latin word villare (small village, hamlet, farm ).

Since the Middle Ages Starr Kirch and Wil were under the rule Gösgen. At the banquet room was built around 1260 by the Good burgers the Front or New Wartburg, which was destroyed in 1415 by the Bernese and sold after the reconstruction in 1539 Solothurn.
