Stasys Å imkus

Stasys Šimkus ( born January 23, 1887 in Motiškiai, Rajongemeinde Jurbarkas, † October 15, 1943 in Kaunas ) was a Lithuanian composer.

Life

Šimkus studied in Vilnius and Warsaw and was a student of Anatoly Konstantinovich Ljadow, Jāzeps Vītols and Maximilian Steinberg Ossejewitsch. After a stay in the U.S., he went to Leipzig to study with Paul Graener and Sigfrid Karg -Elert. In 1923 he founded a private music school in Klaipeda, from which emerged the State Conservatory. From 1931 to 1937 he was professor of composition at the Conservatory and conductor at the State Opera of Kaunas.

Šimkus composed several operas, a symphonic poem, a piano suite, a cantata, a ballad, choral works, songs and church music.

His son Algis Šimkus ( * 1917 ) was known as a conductor, pianist and composer.
