Stefan Bergkvist

Stefan Bergkvist ( born March 10, 1975 in Leksand ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player who played in his playing days from 1992 to 2004, among others, for the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.

Career

Stefan Bergkvist began his career as a hockey player in his hometown in the junior department of Leksand IF, for the first team, he was active in the Elitserien 1992-1994. During this period, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1993 in the first round than a total of 26 players from the Pittsburgh Penguins. First, however, the defender played in the 1994/95 season for the London Knights in the Canadian Junior Football League Ontario Hockey League. From 1995 to 1998, the Swede was at the Pittsburgh Penguins under contract, for which he, however, came only eleven missions in the National Hockey League during this period. Throughout the rest of the time he played for their farm team Cleveland Lumberjacks of the International Hockey League. In the IHL he scored 22 points scorer, including five goals in a total of 182 games.

In the summer of 1998 Bergkvist returned to his hometown club Leksand IF, for which he ran aground in the next three years in the Elitserien. After the descent in the 2000 /01 season, he joined for the following season the EHC Linz of the Austrian Hockey League on. In the season 2002/ 03 he was initially Ayr Scottish Eagles for the British Ice Hockey Super League and then for Asiago in the Italian Serie A1 on the ice. In the 2003 /04 season he played for the Borlänge HF in the third Swedish league, Division 1, and the fourth division Björbo IF and then finished at the age of 29 years of his career.

Internationally

For Sweden Bergkvist took part in the U18 European Junior Championships in 1993, where he was European junior champion with his team.
