Stephen V. Ryan

Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan CM ( born January 1, 1826 in Almonte, Ontario, Canada, † April 10, 1896 in Buffalo, USA) was Bishop of Buffalo.

Life

Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan came in 1841 in the St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania a. Ryan joined the Congregation of the Vincentians and put on 6 May 1846, the perpetual profession from. He received on 24 June 1849 the Bishop of Philadelphia, Francis Kenrick, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

On March 3, 1868, he was named by Pope Pius IX. Bishop of Buffalo. The Archbishop of New York, John McCloskey, donated to him on 8 November of that year in the St. Joseph Cathedral in Buffalo episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Brooklyn, John Loughlin, and the Bishop of Toronto, John Joseph Lynch CM.

Stephen Michael Vincent Ryan took part in the First Vatican Council. He revised the system of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Buffalo and also founded the Catholic newspaper Catholic Union.
