Steve DeVries

Steve DeVries ( born December 8, 1964 in Cincinnati, Ohio ) is a former American professional tennis player.

Life

DeVries attended from 1984 to 1987, the University of California at Berkeley and was elected to this time three times in the Best All-American selection. Between 1985 and 1987 he was a member of the U.S. Junior Davis Cup team. In 1987 he became a professional tennis player, specializing in the men's doubles. Together with his doubles partner Chris Kennedy, he reached the semi-finals in each of the Challenger Tournaments of Bloemfontein and East London this year. In 1989 he was able to win on the side of John Sobel his first two titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, in the next two years followed each two additional Challenger doubles titles with different partners. In 1990, he reached the quarter-finals with David Macpherson of the ATP tournament in Montreal. 1991 played DeVries indeed continue on the Challenger Tour, where he won four more doubles titles with different partners but also began regularly with David Macpherson on the ATP World Tour to play. Together they stood twice in a final, but subject in each case.

1992 was his most successful year. With his doubles partner David MacPherson, he won four ATP doubles titles, including the Masters Indian Wells tournament. Both qualified thereby to participate in the ATP World Tour Finals. The following year they were in the finals of the ATP Championship Series tournaments of Stuttgart and New Haven. Throughout his career, he was standing next to his four double tracks further five times in a final, including at the Masters tournament in Stockholm. Its highest listing in the tennis world ranking he reached in 1991 with position 221 in single and in 1993 with position 18 in doubles.

In the individual he was never able to qualify for a Grand Slam tournament. In the doubles competition in 1991, he reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open, the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon, he stood once each in the second round.
