Steven Muller

Steven Muller ( born November 22, 1927 as Stephan Müller in Hamburg, † January 19, 2013 in Washington, DC) was an American lawyer and political scientist, president of Johns Hopkins University ( JHU; 1972-1990 ) and Fellow at the Foreign Policy Institute and Distinguished Professorial Lecturer at the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS ) - both belonging to the JHU - in Washington, DC.

Life

Muller's Jewish father Werner Adolph Müller led a Hamburg law firm, Muller's mother was not Jewish. After Kristallnacht in 1938, the father was taken to the Sachsenhausen concentration camp. The mother received the invitation to have their two " half-Jewish " sterilize sons; then they could continue to live a " normal life " in Germany. Unexpectedly, Werner Adolph Müller was given the opportunity to leave the camp and emigrate to the United Kingdom. Muller traveled with him his mother and brother after 12 August 1939.

In April 1940, the Müller emigrated to the United States. Stephan Müller took the name Steven Muller. He played in Hollywood in seven films, most recently as Hellwig Anders in " The Seventh Cross", directed by Fred Zinnemann (1944). In 1949 he received the U.S. citizenship. At the University of California, Los Angeles ( UCLA), he studied law and political science. From 1949 to 1951 he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University and attended from there in winter 1949/50, his old home town of Hamburg. After military service in the Signal Corps 1954/1955 he taught as an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Haverford College and only then at Cornell University. In 1971 he became Chancellor of the JHU and 1972 's 10th President (until 1990 ).

Muller Subjects were Comparative Politics and International Relations with a specific emphasis on developments in Europe. Among other things, as a member of the board of trustees of the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies, he already was involved for many years in the German -American relations and the transatlantic dialogue; In 1980 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. On June 18, 1990, the main building of the "Space Telescope Science Institute " was in Baltimore in honor Muller named " Steven Muller Building".
