Stiftsbasilika Waldsassen

The present parish church of the Assumption and St. John the Evangelist in the Bavarian Forest Assen was built as the abbey church in its present form from 1685 to 1704 and belongs to the monastery forest Assen.

Architectural History

Significant church architects such as George Dietzenhofer and Abraham Leuthner created with this pillar basilica one of the most remarkable baroque churches in Bavaria. On the Features artists from all over Europe participated. The completion of the construction took place under Abbot Albert Hausner. The church was consecrated in 1704 by Bishop Franz Ferdinand of hype. With the secularization (1803 ), the monastery church of the Cistercian of the Catholic community was passed as a parish church. It was founded in 1969 by Pope Paul VI. the papal basilica minor charged.

Architecture

The church interior has a total length of 82 meters. The nave is equipped with chapels and galleries. In the monastic choir is a magnificent choir stalls. Precious stucco adorn the entire interior. The ceiling frescoes in the choir depict scenes of the legendary founding of the monastery forest Assen. Under the nave is the largest tomb in Germany. The baroque reliquary treasure is considered the most extensive north of the Alps.

With ten richly decorated skeletons found behind glass in the nave of the Basilica has the largest collection of relics of this type ( so-called Katakombenheilige ) in Europe. They come from the catacombs of Rome and were decorated in the 18th century by Cistercian Adalbert Eder.

In the church can find church services regularly held concerts.
