Strehaia

Strehaia is a town in the district Mehedinţi in Romania.

Geographical location

Strehaia is situated in Lesser Wallachia by the river Motru. The county town Drobeta Turnu Severin is located about 40 km to the west.

History

Strehaia be traced back to the 15th century in documents. The place was a seat of the Wallachian aristocratic family Craioveşti. 1645 donated the Prince Matei Basarab the monastery Strehaia. Since 1671 weekly cattle markets were held. From the 17th to the 19th century Strehaia was a local administrative center. 1921, the site was declared a city. The most important branch of Strehaia is agriculture.

Population

As of the 2002 census, 11,846 residents were registered. 10,560 identified themselves as Romanians and 1,279 as Roma.

Traffic

By Strehaia the railway line from Orşova leads to Filiaşi. In both directions currently operate (2009) daily about eight commuter trains. In Strehaia the route branches off to Motru; there run about three trains daily. Furthermore, the European Route 70 runs through the city. There are regular bus services to Drobeta Turnu Severin and Craiova.
