Motru

Motru is a town in Gorj County in Romania.

Geographical location

Motru is located on a river of the same in the West Lesser Wallachia. The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 35 km northeast.

History

Motru was on administrative decision in 1966 on the territory of the former town Plostina, which was part of the new city along with seven other villages. Reason for the decision to create a city was the development of several coal deposits.

The region has been inhabited at least since the time of the Roman Empire; in the district Leurda some silver coins from the time of Emperor Septimius Severus ( 193-211 ) were found in 1964. The oldest documented settlement on the territory of the present-day city is Plostina ( mentioned in 1385 ).

In today eingemeindeten villages lived partly free farmers, others were in the monastery Tismana submissive.

2000 Motru became a municipium ( Municipiul ) - appointed - ie a more important city.

The most important of the city industry is mining; next play - especially in the eingemeindeten villages - agriculture and livestock play an important role.

Population

As of the 2002 census, lived in the town of 22,967 people, including 22,718 Romanians, 91 Hungarians, 129 Roma and 15 German.

Traffic

Motru has a rail connection on a leading of Strehaia route that was taken into operation in 1962. Several times per day run commuter trains to Craiova. In addition, bus services in the district capital Târgu Jiu. Motru is located on the National Road (drum National) DN 67 of Drobeta Turnu Severin after Râmnicu Vâlcea.
