Rovinari

Rovinari is a town in Gorj County in Romania.

Geographical location

Rovinari is located in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains on the edge of the valley floor Depresiunea Târgu Jiu, in a loop of the river Jiu channeled here ( Shield ). The district capital Târgu Jiu is located about 15 km northeast.

History

Rovinari was originally a small, dominantly agricultural village. Since the end of World War I, but increasingly since the 1950s, in the area of low- Rovinari coal ( lignite ) and partly in days, sometimes in sub- surface mines is encouraged. The village was a completely different character; some settlements were replaced by mining activities; it created numerous prefabricated buildings. The Jiu River was relocated in parts. 1981 Rovinari received the status of a city.

The most important industry of the city are the mining and energy production.

Population

As of the 2002 census, lived in the town of 12,509 people, including 12,457 Romanians, 28 Roma and 20 Hungary.

Traffic

Rovinari is located on the railway line from Târgu Jiu Craiova. A total of five stations on this route are within the city. In addition, bus services in the district capital Târgu Jiu. At the edge of town the road runs Europe 79
