Streptosolen jamesonii

Streptosolen jamesonii

Streptosolen jamesonii is a flowering plant in the nightshade family (Solanaceae ). It is the only species of the genus Streptosolen.

Description

Vegetative characteristics

Streptosolen jamesonii are evergreen, scaly hairy, 1.5 to 2 (rarely to 2.2 ) m tall shrubs that are densely branched. The dense coat consists of glandular trichomes, whose stalk is uniseriate and whose head consists of one to four cells, which are parallel to the stem. In the epidermis, and the bark of the trunk stone cells are formed which contains endodermis Casparian strips.

The leaf blades of the leaves are ovate, bestielt, almost leathery and somewhat wrinkled and rough. The underside is clearly distinct veins, on the upper side do not have the stomata.

Inflorescences and flowers

The flowers are in cymes almost doldentraubigen at 5 to 16 mm long pedicles. The tubular calyx zygomorphic, laced with net-like nervous and 8 to 10 mm long. The four or five calyx teeth are unequal in length and shorter than the calyx tube. The golden yellow or red gold, vase-shaped crown is zygomorphic and 22 to 30 mm long. The spirally twisted corolla tube is curved, the coronary band is slightly oblique, rather narrow, the diameter is up to 18 mm. The five Kronlappen are wide and very short, pointed or extended.

The four stamens are hairy stamens. The upper, lateral (side ), this pair is approximately fixed between 2/3 and 3/ 4 of the corolla tube, has shorter stamens of about 3 mm in length and smaller dust bag, where a theca usually regressed or is small or does not exist. The other pair has Filaments of up to 12 mm in length, which are closely attached to the lower 1/4 of the crown, the anthers are 2.5 × 1.8 mm significantly greater. The pollen are spherical flattened to globose, about 33.5 × 36 microns in size with ( rarely five) seven to eight relatively large apertures. The pollen grain wall ( exine ) is streaky wrinkled. The nectaries are ring-shaped and thick.

Fruit and seeds

The fruits are spherical or egg-shaped capsules that are approximately 5 mm long and contained 60 to 80 seeds. These are 0.6 to 0.9 mm long, cubic- extended, the surface is textured like a net.

Other features

In four studies carried out as was also noted as a base chromosome number of both. The plant contains nicotine, and anabasine Nornikotin.

Occurrence

The only species of the genus Streptosolen grows in Ecuador, Peru and probably also in southern Colombia at an altitude 1200-2500 m. Occasionally, it is drawn as an ornamental plant in gardens because of their striking flower.
