Sub tuum praesidium

Under your protection (lat. Sub tuum praesidium ) is one of the oldest prayers to Mary and Marian antiphon. There you will find evidence already in the third century. Therefore, it was Pope Paul VI. According to " worthy of veneration because of its age and its content great." Particularly striking is the use of the term Theotokos (Greek Θεοτόκος Theotokos ). It shows that this belief content was already familiar to the early church. For the first mario dogma the statement only at the Council of Ephesus (431 AD) was charged.

The prayer reads:

Sub tuum PRÆSIDIUM confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostra deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus ( nostris ) sed libera nos a periculis cunctis semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta. ( Domina nostra, mediatrix nostra, Advocata nostra, filio tuo nos reconcilia, filio tuo nos commenda, filio tuo nos representative. ) Amen.

Under your protection we flee, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers at all times, O glorious and blessed Virgin. ( Our Lady, Mediatrix of our, our Advocate. Reconcile us with your son, empfiehl us your son, places before us your son. ) Amen.

The prayer was often set to music in the classical Western music. Jan Dismas Zelenka alone created ten musical settings ( ZWV 157). Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote the Offertory Sub tuum praesidium, K. 198 ( 158b ).
