Subdivisions of Indonesia

The Republic of Indonesia is divided into 31 provinces, two special regions and the capital district of Jakarta. A second administrative level form government districts and the provinces directly under its cities. This is followed by the districts and finally the villages.

Provinces, special regions and the capital district

Indonesia consists of 31 provinces ( Propinsi Propinsi - - Ez Propinsi ), the two special regions ( Daerah - Daerah Istimewa - Ez Daerah Istimewa ) Aceh and Yogyakarta as well as the Federal District ( Daerah Khusus Ibukota ) Jakarta. Head is always an elected governor. He and the Regional Parliament ( Dewan Rakyat Daerah Perwakilan ) are elected every five years.

The youngest provinces of Indonesia created by secession. They are: Papua Barat ( West Papua, 2003), Sulawesi Barat (West Celebes, 2004) and Kalimantan Utara ( North Borneo, 2012).

Aceh has a greater autonomy from the central government. Here, the Islamic law of Sharia has been introduced.

In Yogyakarta, the Office of the Governor of the respective Sultan of Yogyakarta, the Hamengkubuwono in hereditary monarchy is exercised. The partial autonomy of Yogyakarta and the arrangements for the Sultan in the Governor's office were confirmed by a national law in August 2012. Accordingly, the Sultan not belong to any political party.

The governor of the capital Jakarta district may appoint and dismiss the child mayors of the towns. Moreover, the government may not enter into direct cooperation with cities in other countries.

Administrative districts and cities

Districts

So Desa in Aceh are called Gampong, in New Guinea, parts of Kalimantan and Lampung as Kampung, Pekon in Lampung and West Sumatra as Nagari.

In Aceh, there is a subdivision of the district nor the Mukim. This combines several villages ( Gampong ) together.
