Sulgrave

Sulgrave is a town and civil parish in South Northamptonshire, England, about 5 miles ( 8.0 km ) north of Brackley.

Parish Church

The Church of England parish Church of St James the Less is part of the pastoral care unit of Culworth with Sulgrave and Thorpe Mandeville and Chipping Warden Moreton Pinkney and with Edgcote. At the church, a Norman castle were found during excavation work remains.

Sulgrave Manor

Sulgrave Manor, near the village, is famous for being the home of the ancestors of George Washington. Washington Old Hall in Washington, City of Sunderland was before Sugrave the original seat of the Washington family and was from the 12th century to 1539 by the family bewohnt.In Washington, close to Washington Old Hall there is a place called Sulgrave. After Sulgrave Manor, a street was named: Sulgrave Court, in a district of Milton Keynes houses called Great Holm.

The original building

After the Wharton family in Lancashire (now Cheshire ) had left, where they had spread since the 14th century, bought Lawrence Washington in 1539 by the Crown the Priory of St. Andrew in Northampton, after Henry VIII ordered the dissolution of the monasteries had and made it Sulgrave Manor.

The house was built of local limestone, with a large south facade, a kitchen and pantry, a knight's hall and about a large chamber and two smaller private rooms. The building still exists today and can be visited. Finds, probably from the Tudor period that were discovered 15 meters west of the foundations of the current house, suggest that the original building was much larger than the present house. The Knights' Hall has a stone floor and his Tudor fireplace includes a salt cabinet with carved initials of Lawrence Washington.

The Washingtons of Sulgrave Manor inhabited for over 100 years.

"ER " and " Stars and Stripes"

Lawrence added in 1558 on the southern front of the house added an entrance porch. Above the door in the plaster the royal arms of England and the letters " ER " in honor of " Elizabeth Regina ", the daughter of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, who was sitting at this time on the throne. The arches of the entrance are decorated with the Washington Family Crest: two bears and three five -pointed stars.

Subsequent changes

A north wing was circa 1700 grown by the then owner John Hodges at right angles to Lawrence Washington mansion. Another extension, the west wing, was grown in 1929, when the house was restored.

The village

Sulgrave Village Shop Association Limited (SVS ) was established in July 2004 by the inhabitants of Sulgrave as Industrial and provident society, with the aim of operating a shop and a post office. The profit is not distributed among its members, but must be reinvested in the company for the maintenance and development of community service. The business started its trading in September 2004 under the direction of a board, it employs a manager, supported by about 50 volunteers. As part of a newly established Rural Enterprise Network, SVS, goods are locally grown and produced bought, here is intended that other manufacturers and suppliers support local companies.
