The Sungkyunkwan University ( short SKKU ) with a campus of the human and social sciences faculties in Seoul and one of the science faculties in Suwon is one of the oldest universities in Korea. It was formed from the Seonggyun - gwan, an educational institution, should be educated and trained in young men after the Confucian teachings.

History

The old Seonggyun - gwan

The Seonggyun - gwan probably goes back to the Goguryeo - time: 372 was this kind of institution as a "High School" ( Taehak = 태학 =太 学) means. Only in the Goryeo Dynasty ( from 992 ) the Gukjagam (国子监) was founded, which was renamed in 1367 Seonggyun - gwan. During the Goryeo Dynasty, it had its headquarters in Kaesong. 1398 left it to the founder of the Joseon Dynasty after Hanyang (Seoul) embarrassed. Since then, it's there in Myeongnyun -dong Jongno -gu in the district.

In this establishment, the young men were not only educated, but from their often emerged the future officials who then later high offices dressed. To be included in it, the candidates already had the country school in her home, which was also run by Confucian scholars who have visited and to be gifted. Therefore, the Seonggyun - gwan and the so-called country schools played over the centuries, the supporting role of education in Korea, especially in the Confucian- oriented Joseon Dynasty. In addition to the education was there, as today handed down at the Sungkyunkwan University, the philosophy developed by Confucianism and researched.

The Seonggyun - gwan is sometimes understood as a temple, but not in the sense of a religious site because Confucianism is not a religion. But in Seonggyun - gwan Confucian teachers are revered and ceremonies and practices propagated outwards, so that this institution could be perceived as a place of worship.

Change

The Seonggyun - gwan has now of course no longer as significant as it once had. His role universities have adopted modern western style. On the other hand, people who are convinced of the Confucianism endeavor to ensure the preservation of this venerable institution and partly a matter of adapting it to the present. The first step was in 1895 with founding the modern university with the same name. 1953 she became a comprehensive university. Of course, the modern university has completely different goals than the time-honored Seonggyun - gwan. In addition, there are now nationally nor more than two hundred state schools, which are managed by the Sungkyunkwan University.

The Sungkyunkwan is the venue of the KBS drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal from 2010, in which, inter alia, Song Joong -ki, the graduate permitting.
