SV Spittal

The SV Spittal / Drau is a football club from the town of Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia and currently plays (2012/ 13) in the Carinthian League, the fourth- highest division in Austria.

Club history

The club was founded in 1921 rose in 1949 in the Tauern League - the forerunner of today's Regional - on, in the season 1956/57, increased the Spittal of this again. Starting in 1960, the club was able to establish itself permanently in the Carinthian league. Only in the early 80s, it should go back up. Already in 1980 and 1981 were the Spittaler master in the Carinthia top league, but failed in the play-off for the 2nd Division in season 1981/82, it should work out finally.

The upward trend is expected to continue, according to a 7th place in the 2nd Division 1982/83 followed in 1984, in only their second year of league affiliation, the promotion to the Bundesliga. This was reduced in 1984/85 season from 16 teams to 12, so that five teams had to dismount. Spittal had until the penultimate day the chance to avoid relegation, but in the end it was not enough and so the first and only season to date ended in Austria's highest league in 13th place.

The direct re-emergence in 1986 was missed by 2 points - so close should the Spittaler the Bundesliga promotion not come this long. In the following years the team was more of a regular in the relegation round of the second division, although real danger of relegation did not rule in the rule. Only in the 1990/91 season had to be long feared for the relegation, and also in 1991/92 relegation was only secured after a long battle in the penultimate round. In the next few years but it was oriented again further up than in 1993 which was replaced again and relegation round of the "normal" league system, it went well with the SV Spittal uphill again. The 1997/98 season ended Spittal second in the second division, which the club twice had the same bad luck. For one thing, this was the first time that the runner no longer had the right to a play-off with the Bundesliga second-bottom, and the other received Vorwärts Steyr, second division champions that season, the Bundesliga license only in the third instance, with the support of three minus points. The SV Spittal moved against the judgment to grant Steyr at all the license before a civil court, won the case and was pounding, not without fierce opposition from the Bundesliga clubs, to an increase in the Bundesliga in their favor. The Bundesliga sat at the end of Spittal in the 2nd Division and reported to the club for financial compensation - that is " bought " free practical.

But to engage in the promotion battle again instead of 1998/99, Spittal played a bad season, graced throughout much of the year, the end of the table, was at the end of second last and failed to make matters worse even in descent play-off at SC Untersiebenbrunn - with 1:1 and 0:0 on away goals rule. In the following years in the regional league was offered again and again the same picture: a strong fall was followed by a weak spring, so that the SV Spittal after year on year slipped backwards. The low point marked this the 2003/04 season, where the relegation was assured only due to fortunate circumstances ( withdrawal of other teams). In the season 2006/ 07 saw a young team (average age 22 years) at an early stage everything after a year in the depths of relegation battle off with a great second half was reached but still the respectable 6th place. In the 2007 /08 season started Spittal turn very bad and long fought against relegation and enormous financial constraints.
