Świętajno, Olecko County

Świętajno ( German Schwentainen, 1938-1945 Old churches ) is a town with about 1,100 inhabitants in the powiat Olecki in the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.

The town is the seat of the homonymous country church Świętajno, which has about 4,000 residents. Świętajno than twelve kilometers southwest of Olecko and stretches on the eastern shore of Jezioro Świętajno ( Schwentainer lake).

A count of the circle Oletzko (later County Treuburg ) and government district Gumbinnen counting place in 1933 resulted in 761 inhabitants. In 1938 it was renamed the old churches, so the name sounds German. The neighboring village Suleyken (now Sulejki ) now with 120 inhabitants, is the backdrop for the stories of Siegfried Lenz 'work so tenderly was Suleyken.

Today the region is still dominated by agriculture and has high unemployment.
