The Academy of Natural Sciences Switzerland ( SCNAT) (French Académie suisse des sciences naturelles, Italian Accademia di svizzera scienze naturali, Eng. Swiss Academy of Sciences ), the Swiss Academy of Sciences, Institute of Natural Sciences.

It was founded as the Swiss Society for Natural Sciences (SNG ) Mornex 1815 in Geneva at the invitation of Henri -Albert Gosse. The name was in 1988 in Swiss Academy of Sciences (SAS ) and in 2004 changed to its present name.

SCNAT supports and connects science regionally, nationally and internationally. With forums and platforms, the Academy goes to interdisciplinary topics or strengthens the disciplinary national and international network. The Academy coordinates the science within the Higher Education in Switzerland or works with research funding institutions such as the Swiss National Science Foundation or the academies of sciences together. At the regional level scientific topics of general population are brought closer. This task is performed by the cantonal and regional companies that issue supported by the Academy publications and organize lectures for the public.

Priorities of the Academy

  • Early detection of important social issues
  • Ethics in Science
  • Dialogue between science and society

Early

The sooner the better. This is especially true when it comes to identify issues that have meaning for the future of society and its environment. The Academy makes the example by entertains scientific monitoring systems (glaciers, PERMOS et cetera ) and platforms for socially relevant issues ( forums). But the development of new technologies, such as nanotechnology and biotechnology, synthetic biology pose challenges to natural science is the aim here is to recognize the consequences on a scientific basis in order to assess the opportunities and risks. Since the Academy promotes the exchange within and between the sciences, the result is a broad-based foundation for early detection.

Ethics

Knowing that representatives of science uphold ethical rules, promotes society's trust in science. And only allows a forward-looking research. Therefore, it is important that scientists take ethical issues seriously because research always has an ethical dimension. This can be made available to researchers and the society realize by acting according to ethical guidelines. Such created the Academy in collaboration with researchers.

Dialogue between science and society

Natural sciences we encounter in their application often in everyday life. We often want to know more about it, but often the jargon prevents real dialogue. Therefore it is important that scientific issues are understandable carried into society. Just as important, however, is that science needs of society and asks receives. Be it that they respond to questions and concerns of politics or the media provides information. The dialogue between science and society should allow an open critical communication from both sides. The Academy encourages this dialogue, for example, information and events to new research, with the support of regional projects or the awarding of prizes for good science communication or science exhibitions.
