Sylvain Cambreling

Sylvain Cambreling ( born July 2, 1948 in Amiens ) is a French conductor.

Life and career

He studied music at the Conservatory of Amiens, at the Conservatoire de Paris and at the École Normale de Musique de Paris. In 1972 he got his diploma from an orchestra conductor and won the 1974 International Conductors Competition in Besançon.

From 1975 to 1981 Gambreling was deputy director of the Lyon Opera. In 1981 he was appointed music director of the Opera La Monnaie in Brussels. Together with the director Gerard Mortier, he led the house to the forefront of European opera companies. He has worked with directors such as Luc Bondy, Patrice Chéreau, Karl -Ernst Herrmann, Peter must Bach and Herbert Wernicke.

1992-1997 Gambreling was artistic director and music director of the Frankfurt Opera. Because of his friendship with Gerard Mortier, who was director of the Salzburg Festival since 1991, there was an intense and fruitful cooperation between the three houses. In Cambrelings Frankfurt time many important productions by directors such as Peter Mussbach fall ( Wozzeck, Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, The Merry Widow ), Herbert Wernicke ( The Ring of the Nibelung ) and Christoph Marthaler ( Pelléas et Mélisande, Luisa Miller, Fidelio ).

Under Cambrelings line, which had been in 1993/94 even opera world by the magazine elected conductor of the year, the Frankfurt Opera in 1995 was the first time the predicate Opera House of the Year. However, despite the great success with the public, he left Frankfurt in 1997 before the expiration of his contract after it had come with the necessary budgetary savings for the opera to public debate.

Since 1999 Gambreling take over from Michael Gielen Principal Conductor of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden -Baden and Freiburg. Gambreling is also a guest conductor of many opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Opera, as well as guest conductor of several world-class symphony orchestra. Gambreling also appeared as a conductor at the festivals in Glyndebourne, Salzburg and Bregenz.

Gambreling is new music director in Stuttgart and successor of Manfred Honeck, who has left the Stuttgart Opera in 2011.
