Sylvia McNair

Sylvia McNair ( born June 23, 1956 in Mansfield, Ohio, USA) is an American soprano.

Life

From its 7th until her 23rd birthday Sylvia McNair studied violin. In 1978 she earned at Wheaton College ( Wheaton, Illinois) the degree of "Bachelor in Music", 1982 at the Indiana University ( Bloomington ) to a "Master in Music." Her career as a singer began in 1983 at the Opera House of St. Louis, where she performed until 1989 mainly in operas by Mozart and Gluck. In 1984 she debuted in Schwetzingen, 1987 in Vienna, in 1988 in Lyon, Strasbourg and Amsterdam, in London in 1989 and Glyndebourne, 1990 in Salzburg and Paris, 1991 in New York, in 1992 in San Francisco, 1995 in Chicago and Santa Fe. Meanwhile, she has performed at almost every major stages of the world. In 1997 she received an honorary doctorate from Westminster College and in 1998 from Indiana University. She was awarded the 1999 " Governor's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Entertainment" of the U.S. state of Ohio.

Repertoire

Sylvia McNair's operatic repertoire ranges from the Baroque to the present ( Monteverdi, Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Beethoven, Rossini, Verdi, Sullivan, Stravinsky, Corigliano ). She also sings sacred music and songs. Your skill is documented on more than 70 recordings, including with conductors Claudio Abbado, John Eliot Gardiner, Bernard Haitink, Neville Marriner, Kurt Masur, Seiji Ozawa and Leonard Slatkin.
