Synod of Ingelheim

The Universal Synod of Ingelheim began on June 7, 948 in the former Remigius Church in Ingelheim. It was primarily convened by Pope Agapet II to resolve the schism in the archbishopric of Reims. It was chaired by the librarian of the Roman Church, Cardinal Marinus of Bomarzo. Previously had been in Verdun in November 947 and Mouzon (Ardennes ) beginning of the year 948 two synods dealt with the schism, however, were come to no solution.

Since 931 claimed both Hugh of Vermandois and Artold of Reims, the title of archbishop. Hugo was assisted by his uncle Hugh the Great, Duke of Franzien from the powerful family of the Robertiner; Artold was the favorite of Louis IV of France and Otto the Great. Ludwig and Otto appeared in person, Hugh of Vermandois was absent and was not represented. The Synod decided to Artolds recognition as the legitimate archbishop. In addition, the approach Hugo the Great against his suzerain Louis IV was condemned by the Synod.

In addition to these main questions, the Synod had to decide on the establishment of Missionsbistümern in Scandinavia, which is able to explain the presence of the bishops Liopdag of Ripen, Oredo of Schleswig and Reginbrand Aarhus, which might even received episcopal ordination only during the synod. Furthermore, it was for the Assembly to curtail the rampant own canon law of the Ottos.

With the presence of the kings of the East and West Frankish Empire, 32 archbishops and bishops and other religious dignitaries this Synod was one of the most important meetings that took place in Ingelheim, and one of the highlights in the importance Ingelheim as one of the political centers of the empire.
