Taibao

Taibao (Chinese太保 市, pinyin Tàibǎo Shì, W.-G. T'ai -pao shih ) is the capital of the district of Chiayi in the Republic of China on Taiwan.

Location

Taibao lies immediately west of Chiayi in the Jianan level in southwestern Taiwan. Along the northern city limits, the river flows Puzi.

History

From 1950 to 1982, the city was the capital of the district of Chiayi Chiayi, and Taibao had the status of a rural community (乡, Xiang ). In July 1982, Chiayi received the status of an independent city and was separated from the district. The county government was moved to Taibao, which was given the status of a city (市, Shì ) in July 1991 as the last district capital of Taiwan Province. Today Taibao is almost 36,000 inhabitants, the smallest of all the 39 places in the Republic of China with city status.
