History

Located in a hilly area city was founded on 4 April 1823 by Brigadier General Martín Rodríguez as Fuerte Independencia ( Independence fortress ). In the course of Conquista del desierto, who led by General Roca campaign for the conquest of Patagonia where the natives were largely exterminated, intensified the European presence and numerous immigrants flocked to the city. Of them, most Spaniards and Italians but also Basques and Danes formed strong communities. Tandil got city rights in 1895 and developed into a tourist attraction that people from Buenos Aires, Argentina and other parts from outside attracted.

The name derives from the Tandil Mapuche words tan ( " tumbling " ) and lil ( " rock " ) from. It is probably a reference to the Piedra Movediza ( " moving stone " ), about a 10 m × 5 m measured boulder was placed miraculously balanced on the edge of a precipice and was sometimes brought slightly by the wind to " wiggle ". The stone crashed on February 29, 1912 for unknown reasons from the mountain top. On 17 May 2007, a new Piedra Mevodiza, an almost exact replica, erected at the site of the old Movediza. However, this is immobile and hollow. For the inauguration of the new Piedra Movediza also President Kirchner was present.

The Pioneers of Flight Pablo Suarez in 1895 and Guido Dinelli 1904 took from the top of Garibaldi Hill gliding experiments.
