Taraz

Taras ( Kazakh / Russian Тараз; . Earlier kas Жамбыл / Zhambyl or Russian Джамбул / Djambul ) is a city in southern Kazakhstan on the Talas river. Taras is the capital of the region Zhambyl ( kasach. Жамбыл облысы ) and has 406 262 inhabitants (2009 ).

Economy and infrastructure

The city lies on the Turkestan - Siberian Railway in an irrigated area with orchards and vegetable farming. The industrial products of the city are food, chemicals, fertilizer, textiles, shoes and metal products.

About four kilometers south of the city lies the Taras airport.

History

Taras has been inhabited for over 2000 years. Thus, the city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2002. In the 5th century, the city of Taras there was on a caravan route between Europe and China. It was ruled in the 8th and 9th century by the Arabs in the 13th century and devastated by the Mongols.

In the late 18th century, the Kazakh city Aulije -Ata there was founded, which was annexed in 1864 by Russia. 1936 one changed the name to Mirsojan after Levon Mirzoyan and politicians, as this was later dropped in favor, 1938 in Djambul. On 8 June 1997, the city was on the orders of President Nazarbayev back its original name Taras ( Kazakh scale ).

On November 12, 2011 in Taraz terrorist attack occurred with Islamist background, in which eight people, including five police officers and the bomber were killed.
