Te Umanibong

Te Umanibong ( in modern spelling called also Umwanibong ), the Kiribati National Cultural Centre and Museum, is the name of a museum of ethnology of the state of Kiribati. It is located in the center of Bikenibeu and thus in the center of the capital city of South Tarawa. The word is composed of uma ni bong, in German as ' Star House'. Administratively, it is under a cultural area of the Kiribati Ministry of Internal and Social Affairs. Current leader is Ten Tekautu Ioane.

International is one of the smallest houses in the field of folklore museums and shows around 250 exhibits, artifacts of historical and cultural significance; it also offers approximately 1,500 object records from other collections. It is therefore elsewhere herein by exhibits from the collections in the South Pacific Division of the Ethnological Museum in Berlin, the Peabody Museum, the supplemented Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Hawaii and other institutions in Australia and New Zealand. In addition to the museum building Te Umanibong also shows a traditional meeting house, the maneaba ( Manweaba ).

It is connected to the Pacific Islands Museums Association ( PIMA ) and the Council of Pacific Arts (CPA ).
