Teatro di San Carlo

The Real Teatro di San Carlo is the largest opera house in Naples, Italy. The historic house was for many years the largest and one of the most prestigious opera in Europe.

History

The Teatro San Carlo was designed in 1735 and built by the architects Giovanni Antonio Medrano and Angelo Carasale for the Bourbon King Charles V of Naples. The king wanted to Naples equip with a new and larger theater to replace the old decaying Teatro San Bartolomeo of 1621. The Teatro di San Carlo was for many years with 3,300 seats, the largest opera house and, even before the Scala in Milan, the most prestigious house in Europe and the world and was admired only because of its architecture and rich furnishings. But many others also by the numerous world premières of Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, Gioachino Rossini was the Teatro San Carlo popular with the public. Great tenors such as Franco Corelli, Galliano Masini, Mario del Monaco, Gigli and of course Enrico Caruso were among the artists of this house.

The theater was on November 4, 1737 - the feast day of the King - opened with a performance of Domenico Sarro Achille in Sciro, which on this occasion conducted his work itself. Basis of this opera was a libretto by Pietro Metastasio.

In February 1816 a fire destroyed large parts of the theater. For the repair and restoration of the architect Antonio Niccolini was responsible. In late August of that year was the theater Niccolini - back to the public - with classical modernization. Here the opera Medea in Corinto was premiered by the German composer Johann Simon Mayr On November 28, 1813. The student Mayr Gaetano Donizetti experienced here on September 26, 1835, the premiere of his opera Lucia di Lammermoor.
