Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art

The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (Persian موزه هنرهای معاصر تهران Muzeh -ye -ye Honarhā Mo'āsser -e Tehrān, english Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Tehran shortly MoCA ) is a museum in the center of Tehran and is located in Laleh Park (formerly Park -e Farah ). It is the most important museum of contemporary art in Iran and also houses the largest collection of contemporary art outside Europe and the United States.

History

The museum was designed mid-1970s, at the instigation of Schahbanu Farah Pahlavi on a site of more than 7,000 m² of the architect Kamram Diba and opened in 1977. The architecture of the sprawling building combines traditional elements from the desert regions of Iran such as wind towers ( badgir ) with modern architectural elements.

Structure

The museum consists of new galleries, administrative buildings, a library, a cinema hall, a cafeteria and archives. The building is surrounded by a sculpture garden with works by famous artists such as Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti and Parviz Tanavoli - including:

  • The therapist, by René Magritte
  • Man and Woman by Alberto Giacometti
  • Horse and Rider by Marino Marini and
  • The Ibex ( Capricorn ) by Max Ernst

Exhibitions

Each year, organized five exhibitions of visual art. On display are works by major artists of the 19th and 20th centuries such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Max Ernst, George Grosz, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Edward Hopper and Iranian artists such as Kamal -ol - Molk and contemporary artists such as Parviz Tanavoli, Jazeh Tabatabai, Sohrab Sepehri, Nasser Ovissi, Abolghasem Saidi, Bahman Mohasses, Ahmad Esfandiari and many others.
