Terence Judd

Terence Judd ( born October 3, 1957 in London, † December 23, 1979 at Beachy Head, South England ) was an English pianist.

Life

Judd learned to play the piano from the age of five years and won with ten being the youngest participant ever, the National Junior Pianoforte Competition. He subsequently went on at the Royal Albert Hall and with eleven at the Royal Festival Hall; the latter concert was broadcast by the BBC. At 14, he debuted in the U.S. and 15 in South America. He studied with Eileen Joyce and Maria Curcio. In 1975, he won the 3rd prize split Busoni, only by the second-placed Staffan Scheja beaten because no first prize was awarded. In 1978 he received the Tchaikovsky Competition a split 4th Prize and was immediately committed to a ten-day tour of the Soviet Union. Large parts of its competition program, including the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Tchaikovsky and Prokofiev 's 3rd Piano Concerto, which he played one after the other, were recorded and later released on LP and CD below. In 1979 he toured again by the Soviet Union, with the Leningrad Philharmonic.

Judd took on the day before Christmas Eve 1979 at the age of 22 years by a fall from the famous " suicide rock " Beachy Head life; one reason was not known. In his memory, his parents donated the Terence Judd Award for young pianists, whose most famous winners of the Brit Stephen Hough in 1982 and the Russian Nikolai Lugansky are 1996.

Judd's repertoire was focused on virtuoso romantic works of Franz Liszt in particular to Prokofiev, but also those of Impressionism by Maurice Ravel and modern classics such as Barber or Ginastera. His game is until today praised by critics for his virtuosity, usually marked by fast tempos and high risk.

Excerpts from CD - leaders

" An experience in which you slide to the edge of the chair. Risks are managed with an attitude apparent devotion. The effect is rarely less than enthralling. "

"The game is razor sharp, brilliant and great"

"There are few in this age today who his potential "

" ... One of the few documents of the phenomenal pianism of Terence Judd, whose meteoric rise was cruelly ended at the age of 22 years ... the audience carried away from the burning ... with teeth bared ... Judds ' finale has all the blazing fire of Martha Argerich's live recording with Kirill Kondrashin (but he gets the more fingers on the keys than they are). The 3rd Prokofiev concerto receives an equally rousing performance, and Judd -sounding tone, perfect chord balances and wonderfully clear and separate runs makes a clear again, what a finger breaker this concert ... Judd resumes Argerich - moderate tempos but is of steel, where it is poetic (...). Is particularly exciting as Judd carefully builds the rising voltage to the end ... such captivating Auffführungen ... "
