Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies

Teresa Maria Cristina of Bourbon ( born March 14, 1822 in Naples, † December 28, 1889 in Porto ) was a Princess of Bourbon - Sicily and the last Empress of Brazil.

Life

Teresa Cristina was born as the youngest daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies and Maria Isabel of Spain.

On September 4, 1843 married in Rio de Janeiro Emperor Peter II of Brazil, a son of Emperor Peter I of Brazil and the Archduchess Maria Leopoldine of Austria. Teresa Maria Christina was the cousin of Peter's mother Maria Leopoldine of Austria frühverstorbener, ie a so-called " aunt ". The wife of Emperor Francis I and the first Empress of Austria, Maria Theresa ( in turn, a granddaughter of her eponymous grandmother Maria Theresa of Austria ) was the grandmother of Peter II of Brazil.

Empress Maria Theresa and Teresa Cristina's father, King Francis I of the Two Sicilies, were siblings. This is also Teresa Cristina one of the numerous great-grandchildren of Maria Theresa of Austria and the Holy Roman Emperor Francis Stephen of Lorraine.

Her marriage to Peter II was initially not good, but got better with time. Peter II, who had grown up without a mother, the maternal and loving nature of his wife greatly appreciated. From first rejection was understanding, goodwill, and later attention.

Teresa Cristina died on December 28, 1889 at age 67 in Porto, Portugal. It was in São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon, buried. In 1920, her remains were transferred to Brazil in the imperial city of Petrópolis.
