Ternay, Rhône

Ternay is a commune with 5357 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ), which is located in the department of Rhône and the Rhône-Alpes region. It belongs to the district of Lyon and the canton of Saint- Symphorien- d'Ozon.

Geography

Ternay is located on the Rhone, north of the city flows the river Saône. In the vicinity of Ternay is Lyon, the nearest big city. Ternay lies to the east of the Massif Central, in southeastern France.

History

Ternay was mentioned as a town " Tanernaco " in the 10th century. The legend reports that St. Mayol, the fourth abbot of Cluny, here has healed a blind man and miraculously brought forth sources at the foot of the hill a fountain. The water had a reputation as a medicine for diseases of the eyes. The site was therefore also known as the place of pilgrimage. The parish church was the oldest Benedictine monastery, which was built by the monks of the Abbey of Cluny.

Buildings and monuments

Local attractions include the ruins of the Romanesque church of Saint- Mayol from the 12th century, which today still occasionally concerts are held, and the associated end Fountain Saint- Mayol.

Get remained the Château de la Porte castle, was begun in the 16th century. The castle is now used as a cultural center.
