Terry O'Neill (photographer)

Terry O'Neill ( born July 30, 1938 in London ) is a British photographer.

Life

The son of a Ford employee and a housewife left with 14 years of school early to become a jazz musician. Up to the age of 18, when he had to go to the British Army, he was a drummer in a band.

After his military service he worked as a flight attendant with British Airways ( BA) with the ulterior motive, inexpensive to come to the U.S., where he wanted to make career as a musician. In parallel, he applied as a photographer in BA at the department of technical photography. To form belonged to the photographing of aircraft facilities and airport reports.

Through his snapshot of the UK Home Secretary, O'Neill had taken sleeping in the airport building, the English newspaper " Daily Sketch " was aware of him and hired the young photographers. Later, he moved for a weekly wage of £ 75 for "Sunday Dispatch". He worked in London and photographed including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the model Twiggy. In the 1970s he moved to Hollywood, where he met with Fred Astaire, Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra, among others, for the Magazine " Playboy " and "Life " worked.

His best in his own words photo shows Faye Dunaway in 1977 on the morning after the Oscars for Network ( film ) at the swimming pool of the " Beverly Hills Hotel". From the connection with the actress, whom he married in 1983, but in 1987 left her again, comes son Liam ( born in 1980 ). Today ( 2007) O'Neill lives with his third wife, a modeling agent in London.

O'Neill's photos are on display at the National Portrait Gallery (London ). Named after him, " Terry O'Neill Award ", the jury he also belongs, is awarded annually to British independent photographers.
