Terumasa Hino

Terumasa Hino (Japanese日 野 皓 正, Hino Terumasa; born October 25, 1942 in Tōkyō ) is a Japanese jazz trumpeter. He also plays flugelhorn.

Life

Hinos father, a tap dancer and trumpeter, his son taught quilting, when he was four years old. At the age of nine, he began on the trumpet. From 1955 Hinos began career as a professional jazz musician. The trumpeter was influenced by Miles Davis ( 1960 ), Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. He joined the band by Hideo Shiraki, with which he appeared in 1965 at the Berlin Jazz Festival. He had their first success with his album Hi- nology 1969, which went gold. With his own band, he was invited to the 1971 Berlin Jazz Festival and other festivals and took 1973 live at the Munich jazz club on domicile. The Taro 's Mood resulting there is an example of his own free interpretation of Harbop with lyrical elements. He plays powerful and has a " big shiny " sound.

In America he became known only on the basis of these European recordings with the label Enja, although there was his music already on the labels Catalyst, Inner City, and Blue Note available. In 1975, he moved to New York City. There he worked with Gil Evans, Jackie McLean, Dave Liebman, and Elvin Jones. From the early 1980s Hino spent more time in Japan and played plates in many different styles, eg straight drauflos avant-garde or fusion style. He took on various compositions such as Harold Arlen, Horace Silver, Thelonious Monk and Masahiko Togashi. Two of his bands are the Terumasa Hino Quintet and the Terumasa Hino and Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet. He also worked with his brother, drummer Motohiko Hino.
