Teteven

Teteven (also transliterated Teteven, Bulgarian Тетевен ) is a town in the municipality of the same name and the Oblast Lovech in northern Bulgaria.

The city is a tourist center and is a listed building ( architectural reserve), some houses have been declared cultural monuments. In addition Teteven is one of the 100 national tourist objects in Bulgaria.

Location

Teteven nestled between the Balkans and the Tetewener Wassiljowska Mountains, on both banks of the river Beli Wit. The city is located about 116 km north-east of the Bulgarian capital Sofia, 74 km south-west of Lovech, 60 km west of Troyan, 23 km south-east of Yablanitsa and 54 kilometers east of Botevgrad.

History

Even in ancient times, the region was inhabited by Teteven. In Thracian period here lived the tribe of Serden. Later, the Romans included this area in their Serdica strategy. From the Bulgarian Middle Ages, the Elias Monastery dates ( Sveti Ilija ).

The oldest evidence of settlement dates from 1421 under the name Tetewjan. It is believed that the city takes its name from the family of Boljaren Tetjo ( Tetjov Fortress ), who settled in the area.
